I've loved romance novels since...like forever. I read across most subgenres of romance. I also write fantasy/paranormal and new adult romance.
I've had this on my to-read for a while and decided to read it. Cannot believe I waited so long as it was TOTALLY WONDERFUL! Lovely, layered, complex, but real. Great characters. I've loved historical romance for a long time and yet it is difficult, sometimes to find a way for female characters to break out in a world that covered them up and was so very controlling. Courtney Milan's take on Serena was fabulous. I loved her. So strong, so brave, so stuck. And, Hugo. Oh, dear. I was rooting for them so hard. In some moments, I was reminded of LaVryle Spencer. There were these tiny gestures that meant so much: a twig, a cup of tea, a hairpin, but they were filled with so much emotion and resonance. Just great.
I'm hooked and look forward to reading many more of Milan's books.
